WelFur, a priority in the fur-farming world

WelFur was EFBA’s priority in 2010 and will remain the major point of action in 2011. EFBA launched this scientific project on animal welfare in 2009. The objective is to introduce a certification program at farm level that will guarantee excellent animal welfare on our European fur-farms.

One of the most regulated sectors in terms of animal health and welfare, the breeding of fur-farmed animals is a legitimate agricultural activity, in the same way as breeding cows, pigs or chickens. Fur-farmed animals have to be distinguished from their fellows in the wild as they have been domesticated for more than a century. During the period 2004-2009, the EU-funded Welfare Quality® project developed general principles and criteria for animal-welfare assessment at farm level: good feeding, good housing, good health and appropriate behavior. Detailed welfare-assessment protocols have been published for cattle, pigs, laying hens and broiler chickens. The general objective of the WelFur project is to set-up a welfare-quality-like project on fur-farmed animals.

WelFur, our future, our reputation.
